A Low-Tech, Highly Effective Way to Plan Your Wedding
If your brain feels like a browser with 37 tabs open and your wedding checklist keeps getting longer by the minute, this blog post is for you. Today, we’re diving into the Post-It Note Wedding Planning Method—a simple, satisfying, and super visual way to organize your wedding planning tasks (even if you’re not a planner person).
Whether you're the bride with three color-coded spreadsheets or the one who keeps saying, “We really need to start planning…,” this low-tech method meets you where you are and helps you see what needs to get done.
We’ll also show you how to take it digital using tools like Asana or Slack, so you can pick the version that works best for your brain.
Why the Post-It Note Method Works
Sticky notes may feel old-school, but hear me out: they're visual, tangible, and easy to move around. That means no erasing, no deleting—just peel and stick until you’re feeling calm, clear, and in control.
✅ Great for visual thinkers
✅ Easy to rearrange as plans change
✅ Dopamine boost when you move tasks to the “done” column
✅ Ideal for neurodivergent or overwhelmed brains
Plus, it's surprisingly fun—and way more satisfying than just checking off a box.
What You’ll Need
Here’s your starter pack:
Post-it notes (multiple colors = even better!)
Poster board, mirror, wall, or closet door
Optional: washi tape to divide your layout
Your favorite playlist, a glass of wine, and your wedding planning brain
Now let’s get to the fun part: choosing your layout.
4 Layout Options for Your Post-It Planning Board
You can use your sticky notes in a few different ways depending on how your brain works best. Below are four layouts we recommend, plus downloadable templates for each!
Option 1: Timeline-Based Layout
This is perfect if you like working chronologically and want to see what’s coming up next.
How to Set It Up:
Divide your board by months (e.g., 12+ months out, 9 months, 6 months, etc.)
Place each task under the appropriate timeframe
Use different colors for priority or type of task
Great for: Type-A couples, planners who need structure, anyone trying to avoid last-minute chaos.
Option 2: By Planning Category (Topic-Based)
This layout groups your tasks by topic—budget, vendors, attire, décor, etc.—so you can focus on one category at a time.
Sample Categories:
Budget + Contracts
Vendors
Timeline + Logistics
Stationery + Website
Attire + Beauty
Guest Experience
Decor + Rentals
Packing + Setup
Great for: Couples who want to batch their to-dos or work through planning in focused chunks.
Option 3: Energy-Based Sorting
Feeling tired? Knock out a low-energy task. Feeling creative? Tackle a décor project. This layout sorts your to-dos by the energy level or mindset they require.
Energy Levels:
Low Energy / Quick Wins
Medium Energy / Organizational Tasks
High Energy / Creative Tasks
High Energy / Emotional Tasks
Great for: Anyone with a fluctuating schedule or energy level (hi, fellow ADHD planners 👋).
Option 4: Who’s Responsible (Team Delegation Board)
Don’t want to plan this thing alone? You don’t have to! This layout lets you assign tasks based on who’s responsible.
Delegation Columns:
Bride/Groom/Couple
Partner
Mom/Dad/Family
Maid of Honor/Best Person
Planner/Coordinator
Vendors
Great for: Couples planning with others or trying to delegate (without sounding like a bridezilla).
